Arthurs knew Carlo Faruzzi well. Carlo Faruzzi, aka. Raphael. Raphael was possibly the most influential man in the city at present. So powerful in fact that even Arthurs himself had yielded to the man. The chief certainly wouldn’t have survived to rise to his current post if he hadn’t. Connection the man had come with significant benefits. In fact it had been a win-win all round for Arthurs. Up until now that is. Arthurs was not going to let this ignorant detective or one of Raphael’s moronic lawyers tear down his empire. Arthurs had to resist the urge to reach out and throttle the detective. He managed to keep his anger on a short least, but it was severely yanking his chain.
“Carlo Faruzzi?” Arthurs inquired dubiously. He looked anything but impressed and glanced at the folder that Jonah had placed on the desk. He reached out a puffy arm. The flab rippled and he dragged the folder towards him but he didn’t open it straight away. The word ‘detox’ had caught his attention and he shook his head disapprovingly.
“These are severe allegations detective. From what I’ve heard Mr Faruzzi is a pillar of this community. I know for a fact that the man is on first name terms with the mayor. They play golf together on a regular basis. Mr Faruzzi also donates a lot of money to many different charity groups. Do you really believe that anybody is going to take the word of some disreputable drunk versus an influential gentleman like Mr Faruzzi?”

For a few moments Jonah was almost confused at the mention of Carlo, but they seemed to be one in the same to Arthurs so he nodded. He frowned slightly as the chief rolled off references and friends and all the good things that the man had apparently done for society and cleared his throat.
Jonah took a breath before he started talking. "I believe all allegations as serious as these have some truth behind them to found them, so, sir, let me investigate." It was hard to keep a respectful attitude towards the chief, but Jonah had seen the results of the officers who didn't manage to keep their manners and wits about them.
He looked from Arthurs to the folder and smiled ever so slightly, possibly not even enough to notice. "Maybe its all a cover up conspiracy." It was a serious thought on his behalf, but he knew worse things had happened.

(Carlo Faruzzi is his real (legal) name btw. Raphael is just the alias/nickname that he is more widely known by.)
Arthurs didn’t blame Jonah. The detective was obviously just a righteous do-gooder trying to do his job. Yet what people like Jonah failed to understand was that Raphael was a necessity in this town. There would always be gangsters, just like there had to be politicians. It was a matter of choosing the best of a bad bunch.
Arthurs flicked through the folder dismissively. He pondered as to who the lawyer might be. Stupid, stupid man, whoever he was. Arthurs wanted to strangle the man himself. Anybody working for Raphael should know better. There was always one stupid fuck who had to ruin things for everyone. He barely seemed to be glancing over the pages until his bloated thumb suddenly stopped at a page. He glanced down and read the name before him. Ryder Smith. The name of the lawyer rang a bell but he couldn’t place it.
“Have you got any concrete evidence?” Arthurs asked the detective, looking up. He continued talking without giving Jonah time to respond to the question straight away. “Because I wont have you harassing somebody like Mr Faruzzi without a damn rock-solid reason. I’m hoping to retire in a couple of years and, if he has friends in high places, then I will not have my name soiled because one of my over-zealous detectives who wants to make a name for himself, do I make myself clear lad?”
He eyed Jonah sternly as daring him to be a smart ass.
(With that look, Jonah will probably be smart enough to know that it isn’t a good time to be back-chatting him right now.)

(oh, right, hehe ok ta)
Jonah watched as Arthurs flicked through the folder, the chief was doing anything but looking for anything real. It kind of annoyed him that his boss was so ready to ignore the claims, even if Faruzzi was such an important member of the community, surely the Chief would want some kind of investigation as to why the lawyer claimed to have such scandalous information on the man.
Finally the chief paused to look closer at a page. Jonah felt momentary pride for himself, but then quickly abolished it when Arthurs spoke.
Jonah frowned, his mouth opened to answer the Chief about evidence, but he closed it as the whale continued. He kept his face straight and solemn. Over zealous? There was something wrong with being dedicated to catching criminals? Honestly, how had this man become the chief? Jonah would never see it as something that had been a good or logical move.
It took him a few moment to form the words in his mind. "The lawyer says he has some case files somewhere safe that should be worth something in a court." He said finally. He was sure that the chief would just scoff at his answer, but, the thought and the claim was put forward and it meant there should be some questions asked.

Seemingly unconvinced, Arthurs leaned back in his chair. It seemed to groan under his weight and he looked at Jonah as if contemplating his words. He seemed to uncharacteristically soften a little.
“I’ll admit, it sounds like horse shit to me, but you’ve met the guy… He’s expecting some sort of deal I assume…” He leaned forward and glanced briefly at his watch. A sign that time was indeed ticking, but his mannerisms were no longer quite so negative. “So, explain to me exactly how you are intending to pursue this case detective?”
The tone of his voice was curious rather than chastising, yet his face was expressionless. He was a little difficult to read at this point, yet everyone had heard how volatile he could be. Perhaps he did think there were merit to his claims or perhaps this was just the calm before the storm. He laid one of his puffy hands casually upon the file.
